Patience Isi Iwelomen is a lawyer at the Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission where she works with the Investment Management team responsible for reviewing mutual fund registration documents, monitoring their compliance with local regulation, and providing industry practitioners with regulatory guidance on mutual fund laws. Her responsibilities also include contributing to policies as a member of multiple capital market-wide committees and drafting regulation to guide mutual fund operations in Nigeria. Prior to joining SEC Nigeria, Patience worked with a Nigerian-based law firm engaged in oil and gas advisory, and capital market advisory, for local and foreign companies. Patience obtained a bachelor’s degree in Law with honors from the University of Lagos, Nigeria and a master’s degree in Law, with a commendation, from the University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom. Patience is a 2021 alumna of the IFC-Milken Institute Capital Markets Program during which time she interned with a DC-based fintech advisory firm; providing advisory services on policy, regulatory, market matters related to financial technology (“FinTech”), and engaging in client consulting, business development opportunities, and research projects focused on digital assets, payment systems online lending, RegTech, data use and privacy, crowdfunding/P2P lending, and regulatory innovation and sandboxes. As a GBBC Regional Ambassador, she hopes to advocate for blockchain adoption both in the private and public sectors of the Nigerian capital market to enhance investor experience and regulatory efficiency in promoting transparent markets.
