Just the Facts: Understanding ISO and International Standards for Blockchain and DLT

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) brings together experts from around the world to develop international standards for products, services, and processes that help support quality, safety, and accessibility. An independent, non-governmental organization, ISO comprises national standards bodies from 175 countries and has developed more than 26,000 International Standards and other deliverables across technology, management, manufacturing, and other areas.

Within ISO, Technical Committee 307 (ISO/TC 307) was established to address the growing need for international standards for blockchain and distributed ledger technologies (DLT). Its work is designed to build market confidence and stakeholder consensus by developing standards that strengthen areas including security, privacy, scalability, and interoperability.

GBBC serves as a Category A Liaison to ISO/TC 307, enabling us and our members to contribute expertise and insights to the committee’s ongoing work. GBBC members can also help guide GBBC’s engagement and priorities with ISO/TC 307 and suggest topics for consideration as potential new work items.

Learn more about ISO, ISO/TC 307, its active workstreams, and opportunities for GBBC members to contribute in GBBC’s latest edition of Just the Facts.
